Sunrise, Sunset

We started out heading east running as quick as we could with a trailer in tow from the Upper Peninsula’s frigid winter chasing the sun.  We have watched the sunrise pop up out of the Atlantic from the South Carolina shore,
and followed it across the sky early morning with a coffee cup in hand along the Gulf of Mexico in Alabama
 and Texas:

While in Texas we turned our heads (and my heart) to follow the sun’s path and headed westward into Arizona and California.

Now we have finally once again watched old Sol lie down for the evening in Northern California’s mighty Pacific:
I am sorry to say it is getting very close to time to reverse our trip.  We hear that winter is fading in the U.P. unlike last year (this photo was taken from our yard on April 21, 2009):
and so we need to make our way home.  Like everyone else we have to prepare as tax time is drawing near.  Tax time... hmmph... now that’s a real buzz kill.

Upon arrival in Northern California we promptly caught a wicked cold and a bonus prize of poison oak on our arms.  We were the unhuggables.  Folks would come in to visit and   would reach out to hug and say hello but we had to give warnings not to touch and we would give a little wave and a smile instead.

Poor substitute for a hug I have to say. Then we would proceed to hack and sniffle all through the conversations. Nice. So we promptly tried to quarantine ourselves so as not to share our ‘gifts’ with the family but we were unsuccessful.  We shared with my sister, my daughter, and my grandson...  just the cold though not the poison oak.  Somehow though I don’t think that was much consolation to them as they sniffled, coughed, and battled the subtle but persistent headache.

Now, it all seems to have cleared up so we have finally been having some nice visiting time with family and soon with friends too.  I have to say that there never seems to be enough time for friends and family. It’s like eating chocolate... or nachos...  you always want more. I suppose that is just the way it is though,  as everyone is busy with everyday life. As long as we keep trying and keep reminding our friends/family that we love them even when we are not sitting with them all day visiting.

Along the lines of time passing... I have been noticing lately when I pick up something needing to be read I have been spending more time than normal adjusting my arm, hands, eyes, in order to be able to read the print.

Looks like I am working the slide on an invisible trombone.  It seems that my arms are shortening after these many years and I need to hold things a bit farther away to be able to read things clearly.  I wonder if I can find supplements of some kind at the health food store for restoring arm length.

I did not want to believe I was old enough it at first but it appears that I might be needing the dreaded reading glasses!  Part of it is that I am getting to be the age where my eyes are probably a bit tired and the other part I fear might be payback for all the previous teasing of my only slightly older peers for this exact same malady... if you could call it a malady.

One of my previous supervisors... well a supervisor or two up the chain of command actually.  She was the head of the Adult Division of the Probation Department to be exact.  Anyway, she was a woman whose family was familiar to me since my high school days. In fact, her sister was in my graduating class.  This woman was an authoritative sweetheart of a little red headed gal who stands maybe 5 feet tall... and during the last days of her tenure as the head of the division she was just starting to REALLY need her reading glasses.  I simply could not help myself at times.

One day, I walked into the file room of our department where I found her peering up at the top shelf trying to read the names on the file tabs.  This level of files was particularly difficult for her to see because the shelf itself was probably higher than six feet tall and then the tabs set up at different levels even higher.  I glanced at her for a moment stretching, squinting, trying desperately to see the labels.

I stopped what I was doing, walked over closer to her, linked my fingers together and leaned over a bit putting my linked hands out like a step and asked, “Need a boost?”

She reached up and struck me viciously (not really) on the shoulder then laughed (sort of) and said, “Alright you asshole, I was looking for a file but it is one of your damn probationer’s files anyway so you find it and bring it in to me.”  She then marched off to her office on her little legs... leaving me cackling behind her in the file room.  It’s a good thing she liked me.

I now know what she did though... before I could bring her that file she went back to her office and hexed me so that I too will know what it is like to stretch, squint, shift and adjust when trying to read without reading glasses.  She has been avenged.

Of course, I am going to try to play it off like it is no big deal... maybe even see if I can find some of those librarian, Diana (wonder woman) kinda glasses

that when you take them off a wonderful transformation occurs...

if I am going to wear granny glasses I might as well try to find some that David might kinda like too.

Going to Carolina in my mind...

We had a nice time in Wilmington North Carolina... ate fabulous sushi at the Bento Box and then spiffy burritos at Flaming Amy’s. We miss real restaurants so this was a treat! We also took a day and walked around the Wilmington historical district and marveled at the fact that places downtown seemed to just open apparently when they felt like opening. For example, a sign on a shop would say open at 10 am... well, it was like 11 a.m. when we hit town and there was no signs of life.

Too bad. I was looking for a squashed penny machine.

So we did a little of the river walk, and then we took to driving the pickup around the historical area and found some great looking houses....

We did not ride with this fellow although he might have been fun.

Later David hit the ball a bit...

and we visited the course we came to see. As it turns out, this particular golf course is not what we were looking for. So... off we go again chasing the sun southward.

It rained a little through the carolinas but both the North and South Carolina highways were fantastic. Clean, clear, well maintained, not crazy busy. When you notice how nice a freeway is... you realize they have been taking good care of it.

I think I mentioned I got a kick out of the fact that there were palms beneath the pines instead of ferns like back home. Anyway, from Wilmington, it was a short ride past Myrtle Beach and then down to Huntington Beach State Park which is right on the beach. This park is a super popular area for bird watchers because of the marshes in the area... and at the edge of the marsh near the front gate of the park I immediately noticed the sign that really bummed me out:

Do not feed the alligators.

Oh.. ok... I better put away the bucket of raw chicken or raw poodles that

I have been packing around for just such an opportunity.

Dang... the man is always a-ruinin’ my fun!

Delta didn’t let it ruin her fun though! Silly gators!

You should have seen the hair down the ridge of her back

when she first saw this fellow!

She snuck up on him all careful and slow.

Back at the camp we wandered down the path to the beach around sunset and goofed off a little.

We made such a score of great shells that upon our return to camp we quickly checked out the tide table so that we can be some of the first on the beach in the morning to score some more.

Turns out we had no problem finding shells that next morning. We were alone out there (it was like 6 am) and found quite a few more very pretty ones.

However, after taking pictures of the shells etc. my camera decided to run out of batteries

so I did not get a picture of the sunrise.

As far as the camp, it is definitely off season so there are very few people... but the park is not empty by any means. This campground might actually be at half capacity and there are bird watchers galore wandering around all the time. It has been nice, quiet, clean, and very pretty. Just what you'd want. We might go check out Georgetown in the next couple days. Will keep y'all up to date.

Golden days

Enough of the moose already.

We interrupt this blog for a public service announcement:

HAPPY 44th ANNIVERSARY MOM AND DAD!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY JEFF!

AMBERLEO'S 22nd BIRTHDAY IS ON IT'S WAY TOO!

Ok.. back to the regular programming:

Even though we had started unpacking we had done so a bit prematurely.... on purpose. We had decided at the last minute... sorta... to use pine floor in the living room area. There was a tad bit of a problem with the laminate so we adapted. The only thing is we moved in before we put a finish down on the floor. We were just so excited to have our own place again we could not wait. Well, the other day... couple of days really... we cleared the floor and put down the finish.

I have to tell you after being a by-stander while my Dad did the floors in our house I was afraid of the toxic soup that I thought was going to be in those gallon buckets. I was worried it was going to smell, it was going to make us dizzy and then the floor would not set right. Brain cells were in danger and the dog's noses would be burned out from the chemicals. I was sure it was going to bubble and blister and then we would have to do it all again... to say the least I was concerned... but I was mistaken.

We used a clear matte type finish and did two coats. David and I have the patience of gnats so that was about all we could squeeze out but I must say it did NOT stink and it went down super easily.... it did not make us sick, did not bubble, and did not hurt the dogs. Also... it looks great! I hope the color starts to warm up soon just like the ceiling did... it is going from the lighter pine color to a nice honey color.. a natural change and it is very pretty.

Phew... once it was dry according to the time recommended on the back of the bucket we brought the furniture back in and unpacked... again.

Someday I will have to pick wall paint colors. Geez.

The time between coats we went to Rhinelander in Wisconsin. Sounds like somewhere Vikings still roam doesn't it? Well, they do.

Anyway that's another story... but while in Rhinelander we bought a TV and a wall arm mount thingy... you can kinda see the TV in the picture above in the corner. It is VERY cool... 32" HDTV and its like being hypnotized when it comes on...

I have to admit it has actually been kinda nice not having a TV for awhile. I read quite a few of the books on my 'to read later' list. Poor David has not been able to read though he has been too busy working.

Well, we noted the other day as we have been doing nearly everyday since fall started the change in the colors.. we have now gone past the orangy-red thing into full on yellow gold. This yellow gold color is so bright it glows... I have seen many garden magazines suggest that people plant moon gardens. The moon gardens are to be filled with white flowers and grey foliage so that they can be enjoyed in the evening hours. Let me tell you this bright yellow lights up the day AND it does seem to brighten up in the evenings. Extends the sunshine a little bit longer now that our days are getting shorter.

Here is the road past our house:

and then our driveway:

the driveway looking back towards the road:

below is just past one of our woodpiles next to the shed:

and of course this next photo is the secret hobbit path across the street.
You know the one, it is the path Frodo, Sam, Merry and Pippin are on right before they feel the Nazgul coming and the leaves all start swirling around and they have to hide under the roots
of that tree with the spiders and worms and stuff....

ummm.. you Lord of the Rings nerds... I mean fans...
don't act like you don't know EXACTLY
which scene I am talking about...

anyway...

the view that afternoon to the lake :

and then below the pictures below of Squirrel Town.. no not Funky Town...

Squirrel Town.

(Squirrel Town is between our place and Kennedy's white cabin) .
There is one red hold out in all that yellow:

Oh... and this below is the view from squirrel town back towards our house:

I am not sure if I explained about Squirrel Town yet. The squirrels and chipmunks lay here in wait for our dogs. They patiently sit and watch until we let the dogs out the door. Then they squeak loudly to get the dogs attention. You can hear them chuckle as they watch the dogs barrel out the door sprinting towards them. When they see the whites of the dogs' eyes and the frothing of their jowels they scramble up the nearest tree.

Man oh man does that make the dogs crazy.. they get so frenzied they try to climb the trees and run in circles around the trunks... and just when they are about to give up a squirrel on the other side of Squirrel town will squeak and they run over there to start it all again. The squirrels love it... so do the dogs actually and it keeps them busy.

Every once in awhile a dark cloud passes over and you hear a .22 rifle cracking a few times and the squirrels are quiet for a couple of minutes ( a moment of silence I presume) . The dogs are confused a little but then you hear another squeak and they go back at it...

a few less squirrels in the game...
just to make things even dontcha know.
